Isabella Airoldi Casati, the wife of Baron Gianluigi Casati, had died aged twenty-four, in 1889. On its exhibition in 1891, the bronze monument to Isabella instantly enjoyed great acclaim. The underlying concept is one of the first to express ‘sweet death’, encompassed in a beautiful woman who passes serenely from sleep to the life beyond.
